| Welcome |
|
|
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone
struggling through extreme weather and devastating consequences, especially
those in Victoria, where so many lives and properties have been lost due to the
catastrophic firestorms; and those in far north NSW and Queensland, where floods
and rain are wreaking havoc. Please contact us on support@takeabreak.com.au if you
need to suspend your property at this time of immense national sadness and
loss.
Most of you probably have your Easter
bookings sorted. Don't forget those people who love to book a break at the last
minute - make sure your calendar shows your availability so you can benefit from
bookings from those who haven't yet realised how close Easter really is.
If you are not already
fully booked for Easter, think about some creative Easter specials/packages, and
add them to your listing.

We survey
users of TakeABreak every month and we always get valuable feedback that can
help us - and you - to improve the service we offer. Below are a selection of
recent quotes from customers.
Child
policy "Child policy to be specified - are children really welcomed,
or just tolerated? What facilities does a property have to make it easier for
families staying with children? I want to know about nearby facilities and
services, such as food outlets and activities."
Pictures "It would be great if
more pictures were included so we really knew what to expect when we arrive.
This is especially important if a property has more than one cottage, so you can
see exactly what you will be getting. Also I would prefer to see photos of the
bedrooms and the bathrooms, rather than sunsets or
scenery."
List of inclusions "A full
list of inclusions such as linen, dryer, dishwasher, air-conditioning/heating
and so on would make for easy comparison. Also list if the shower is over a bath
or separate. I travel with my elderly parents and a shower over a bath is no
good, as they are unable to step over the bath and there is the fear of falling
and slipping."
Availability "I know this
isn't under your control, but I wish people would update their availability more
often. This isn't the first time we have enquired about a property that is
supposed to be available but turned out it
wasn't." |

Heartbreaking natural
disasters We'd like to express our condolences to those
affected by the fires and floods. Those of you who are unaffected might consider
joining TakeABreak in making a contribution through the Red
Cross.
We know that some properties have been destroyed. Others are
without power and utilities. Other operators are busy helping in their
communities. If there's anything we can do to assist you please call us on

One thing
operators in the affected regions will be worrying about is the longer term
impact on tourism. Once things calm down we will be working hard to convince
people to once again holiday in your destinations. Following the (admittedly
much smaller) fires at Halls Gap in 2006 we found enquiries dipped for about a
month but then quickly returned to close to pre-fire
levels.

Online
booking continues to grow Recent reports tell us that almost 80% of
Australians use the internet to book holidays, airline tickets and
accommodation, a higher proportion than the US and an increase of 54% over the
past three years. This shows that the increasing professionalism of major online
travel booking sites is paying dividends and is further reason to ensure that
your listing looks it best, properly reflects your property, your availability
is up-to-date and that your rates are clear and
current.
One million
nights requested! That's right - one million! This backs up the
information about online bookings in the paragraph above, and to emphasise the
trend, our bookings for January 2009 increased 13% on the same time last year.
Rooms nights have remained stable, with the average stay over the last 12 months
being 4.4 nights.

Request a deposit straight
away Our research shows that guests want to get to
confirming a booking as quickly as possible. This is backed up by our statistics
which show that on average the guest is 60% more likely to book when the initial
response is a deposit request compared to an available response. So where
possible send a 'request deposit' response rather than 'available'... you'll be
pleased with the results!
Simplify your rates With so much talk about the economy, its only natural that guests
are more focussed on value. Most of the properties listed with TakeABreak
already represent great value, however this may not always be clear to the
guests. Many properties list extra fees such as cleaning fees, linen, extra per
person, etc. Potential guests are then not sure exactly what your final price is
and so they aren't confident about the value your property represents. Add these
fees into your rates and guests will find your rates clearer and you will get
more bookings.

Updates |
Coming soon: Calendar and booking system
upgrade Many of
you have asked for a more flexible calendar where you can block dates by
room-type or manage individual rooms and bookings. You also want a better way to
confirm bookings and keep track of booking requests. You want to save time on
common tasks like a pre-stay checklist, organising check-ins and cleaners. We've
been working hard to make all these tasks easy and now the wait is now almost
over!
The upgrades have been designed from the ground up based on input
from accommodation operators like you. Key elements have been used in real life
by up to 600 operators over the past 2 years, so we're confident that the
systems are reliable. We've had great feedback from our testers and we're sure
the upgrades are heading in the right direction. However, we'd like to ask for
one final round of input before we put the upgrades live. Your input will have
an impact - so click here to
complete the survey.
Based on your feedback we will shortly announce
the final details of our greatly improved calendar and booking
system.

TakeABreak
affiliates We have a successful Affiliate Program that is very
simple, easily tracked and works. Websites, and now blogsites too, can join our
Affiliate Program. Affiliates send more bookings your way, and increase our
market penetration. Below are a couple of introductory paragraphs from two of
our new affiliates...
BringtheKids.info is a new site designed for
pet owners travelling with their pets. More people than ever are travelling with
their pets. Armed with the right information, pet owners can bring their beloved
“kids” with them wherever they go. Keeping pace with the trend, many more
hotels, B&Bs, rental properties and campgrounds are now allowing pets – and
catering for them too. Whether you’re staying in your home country or travelling
internationally, BringtheKids.info
is the place to start.
Kids on the Coast is Queensland’s only
regional parenting magazine, and they are justifiably proud of this free
high-quality, full-colour glossy publication that is a winner with both parents
and advertisers. Regular sections, a great combination of both light-hearted and
serious articles, and local up-to-date content by parents, for parents, means
the magazine is not a ‘throwaway’ - most readers pass it on to family and
friends to read, or keep previous issues for future reference.
Their website has ensured ongoing
success and the membership database is growing daily with readers Australia
wide.

Why guests
return In tourism, there is a lot of competition for business. Massive all-inclusive resorts, internationally recognised
hotel chains, and companies with glossy advertisements can quickly lure business
away. TakeABreak formed in an effort to help smaller operators even the playing
field while providing Australians with a better range of accommodation options –
and it worked. Today, even the owner of a single holiday home or bed and
breakfast can easily reach millions of potential guests with information,
photographs and reviews of their accommodation.
But while it’s exciting
to have someone choose your property over everyone else’s, what can you do to
win them back again? TakeABreak decided to survey guests to learn what compelled
them to return to a place they’d previously stayed, instead of trying something
new. We had an overwhelming response, with more than 1500 completed surveys! To
make your job easier, we’ve narrowed it down to the top
six reasons...
Remember that our new support
section is packed with ways to help you streamline processes and
improve your business.

Tips for keeping cool and saving money *Ceiling fans are the most energy-efficient form of cooling, and cost
around $4 a year to run.
*Operate air-conditioners on a low setting and choose a unit size
suitable for the area.
*Close curtains over large glass areas. When closed, window coverings
also protect you from the sun's glare.
*Good insulation can reduce temperatures by as much as 10
degrees.

Canberra and
cultural tourism Cultural tourism is alive and prospering in
Canberra and continues to draw many tourists from interstate. Last financial
year Canberra enjoyed more than 975,000 visitors, and many planned their stay to
visit exhibitions such as Turner to Monet, and other museums, galleries
and memorials. It is expected that the current Degas exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia will
attract similar numbers (more than 180,000) and over 70% of the visitors came
from interstate. This is a real opportunity for Canberra operators to promote
cultural tourism and benefit from the visitor numbers.
Tourism gloom an
opportunity While the global credit crunch has seen
overseas tourists numbers dwindle to a trickle, it does mean that people who are
watching their budgets are more likely to take domestic holidays. This is an
opportunity for operators around Australia - and particularly in regional
Australia - to ensure they offer competitive and professional alternatives to
the overseas holiday and grow their local visitor numbers to replace overseas
guests. Let's convince people to use some of their stockpiled annual leave on a
holiday within Australia, by offering great rates, service and information on
local attractions and things to do.
